Breathe new life into your wardrobe
Do you ever go shopping in your closet? Not just once a year when you feel the need to purge everything during spring-cleaning. I’m talking about taking a real shopping trip through your drawers and hanging items and really taking a look to figure out if an item in your wardrobe still works. I do it all the time, and I know that it’s a popular thing now to arrange your hangers the same direction, then once you wear an item, turn the hanger around, so after a year or so, you really see what you’ve worn – and what you can consider donating.
But here’s the thing for me. I, like many women, need choices (though my husband doesn’t quite understand that). I’ve contemplated donating several items over the years and haven’t (though I do donate clothing all the time, who am I kidding). Even if I’m if in-between two sizes for a few things, I tend to keep both, because I like going back to “older” pieces and changing it up - giving new life to my wardrobe (and most of us women don’t usually stay the same size all the time).
Take this black and white chevron dress for example. I got it at Marshall’s several years ago and wore it to my engagement party. I love this dress and it’s a definite win because it won’t be out of style anytime soon (I bought this in 2012, so that speaks for itself). I looked at this dress recently and decided to just simply throw on this super soft faux-fur vest (with pockets!!!) from Coldwater Creek and BAM – something new and original was formed.
But, let me back up here a bit. People always ask me where I shop – for clothing, shoes, accessories, you name it. To be honest, it’s always a little tricky to answer because I don’t just have one answer. I may be walking through a mall and spot a cool dress in a window, or I may see a pair of shoes in a catalog, or online somewhere. I don’t like to put myself in a box of only shopping at one store. True, I have some favorite places to shop, but I find my truly special pieces are totally discovered by chance. I’ve found some of my most coveted pieces from the clearance section at Nordstrom Rack! Yes, it can be overwhelming, but if you trust your instincts and shop by scanning the area and gravitate towards pieces you like, then go for it. Don’t overthink it too much. For me, I always head towards cool prints, textures, bright colors, and good quality fabrics (and if you can get them on sale, even better).
So here’s my tip for this week – make sure to breathe some new life into your wardrobe. You’ll get so much more use out of them, if you re-imagine them into a different outfit. The next time I wear this dress I think I’ll go for a 70’s modern vibe. Perhaps instead of the pink suede pumps, I’ll sport some equestrian-style boots and layer on a few long gold necklaces. Top it off with pin-straight hair and I’ll feel like a girl who just stepped out of Studio54…in 2016.
The first time I wore this dress - with my then soon-to-be husband, Elliott.
